’Seti and Sekhmet at Abydos.’
This relief shows the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet holding the “anch” sign before the mouth of pharaoh Seti I. The sign is entwined in her “menat” necklace.
The relief is located on the west wall of the Second Hypostyle Hall of the Seti I Temple at Abydos, between the entrances of the Chapel of Ptah and the Chapel of Ra-Horachti. For a wider view see picture 29867.

’Seti and Iousas at Abydos.’
The goddess Iousas is giving pharaoh Seti I the breath of life, in the form of an “anch” sign (symbolizing life) flanked by two “was” sceptres (symbols for prosperity).
Iousas was associated with the creator god Atum. Her nickname “The Hand of Atum” recalls her role, i.e. the hand of Atum with which he masturbated to create the first divine couple, Shu and Tefnut.

’Ra-Horachti and Iousas at Abydos.’
This relief detail shows Ra-Horachti accompanied by the goddess Iousas. Iousas was associated with the creator god Atum. Her nickname “The Hand of Atum” recalls her role, i.e. the hand of Atum with which he masturbated to create the first divine couple, Shu and Tefnut.
The relief can be found on the south wall in the Chapel of Ra-Horachti, one of the seven chapels that are located directly west of the Second Hypostyle Hall of the Seti I Temple at Abydos.
The detail in this picture is part of scene in which pharaoh Seti I offers various objects such as a sceptre, crook and flail to Ra-Horachti. It is one of the 36 episodes of the Daily Temple Ritual that are shown in the chapel, ranging from Seti entering the sanctuary to cleaning and dressing the statue of the god.

’Chapel of Amun in the Seti I Temple at Abydos.’
The Chapel of Amun is one of the seven chapels that are located directly west of the Second Hypostyle Hall of the Seti I Temple at Abydos. The false door at the west end (left) of the chapel was probably intended to provide the spirit of Amun a means of entry into the chamber.
The walls of the chapels are decorated with 36 episodes of the Daily Temple Ritual, which would have been performed in this chamber by the king or his representative before a statue of the god. Here we are looking at the north wall.
In the bottom right corner of the picture we see Seti breaking the clay seal of the shrine in which the statue of Amun is standing (for a detail see photo 29881). In the upper right corner we see the pharaoh actually opening the doors of the shrine (for a detail see photo 29882).

Itinerary
After breakfast, I will pick you up from your hotel in Luxor to discover the ancient sites. First, visit Abydos, the ancient Egyptian believed of God (Lord of the underworld) to be buried there. The temple was built by King Seti I, and completed by King Ramses II, known as the temple of Seti I. It is located in Abydos city about 420 km to the south of Cairo in Sohag Government, and 135 km from Luxor. The paintings of the Gods and Pharaohs on the walls of the Osiris Temple at Abydos are among the most beautifully preserved in Egypt.
Temple of Seti I
The temple of Seti I was built on entirely new ground half a mile to the south of the long series of temples just described. This surviving building is best known as the Great Temple of Abydos, being nearly complete and an impressive sight. A principal purpose of the temple was to serve as a memorial to king Seti I, as well as to show reverence for the early pharaohs, which is incorporated within as part of the "Rite of the Ancestors".

The temple of Hathor
The temple that dominates this complex, the structure that commands the attention of those who visit, is the Temple of Hathor. The original temple structure underwent continuous modifications throughout the Middle Kingdom and up until the beginning of the reign of the Roman emperor Trajan. The existing temple's structure began construction in 54 B.C.E, the late Ptolemaic period, under the reign of Ptolemy Auletes. The hypostyle hall was built in the Roman period under Tiberius.
